One of the most common questions that arises when one begins to construct their own wellness program is “where do I start”. To answer this question we must first ask ourselves another question, which is “what would I like to achieve”? By asking ourselves this question we are in the development process of establishing our own personal health goals. If you are not familiar with setting goals the aim is to first identify no more than 3 long term goals, and then break these long term goals down into smaller incremental goals that can be achieved in a short time span. For example the following would create a simple long term goal for losing 20 lbs in 6 months.
- Goal lose 20 lbs in 6 months
- Indentify the caloric intake to lose 1 lb per week and implement
- Develop meal plan that meets the caloric intake to achieve above goal
- Determine the cardio and exercise necessary to lose 1 lb per week
The above represents very simple goal setting example and in most cases your particular goal or objective will require a more complex structure, this is where we come in. For instance here on our site we have provided several tools (located at http://www.rightwaywellnessprograms.com/healthtools.html ) to help get you started. Additionally our clinicians offer many therapies and expertise to help you with your wellness goals. Of course, we encourage you to consult your physician prior to any changes in your diet, nutritional supplementation or exercise program.
To help get you started below you will find some helpful tips that can be utilized with virtually any health goal you wish to achieve.
- First and foremost, evaluate your drinking water to make sure that you are drinking a high pH water and preferably filtered for optimum health. The human body tends to maintain body fluid at approximately pH 7.3 according to homeostasis function. The body tries to maintain the proper pH balance of each organ system, with pH 8.8 in the pancreas as the peak. However many doctors and researchers now believe that a consistent acidic constitution will lower the immune function in the body making it susceptible to degenerative disease. Drinking alkaline water can aid this critical pH balance in the body helping us to stay healthy. Also, drink plenty of water every day at least 8 glasses per day and make sure your store your water in a safe container (no cheap plastic). Poland Springs bottled water has a pH of over7.5.
- Avoid dairy, or at least if you have to have dairy buy organic and preferably fresh, not homogenized. Dairy products are laced with steroids, anti-biotic, and growth hormones which can interfere with homeostasis of the body, to say the least.
- Avoid processed foods and eat fresh, preferably raw organic foods if you can afford it. If your budget does not allow you to eat all organic then try to buy organic foods that are the bulk of your diet. If you eat meat then these should be organicaly grown since like dairy most meats and poultry are full of anti-biotic, growth hormone and steroids.
- Exercise if you can and try to get out in the sun when the weather permits. Vitamin D is hard to come by and spending time in the sun will provide you a good healthy dose of Vitamin D, which has found to be among the most popular vitamin deficiency. In recent times, more and more is being written about vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency. It is now known that vitamin D receptors are present on almost all tissues in the body. This discovery has lead researchers to hypothesize vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency is not only associated with endocrine disorders (rickets, osteomalacia, and osteoporosis) but may also be associated with paracrine disorders such as type 1 diabetes mellitus (Hypponen, Laara, Reunanen, Jarvelin, & Virtanen, 2001), schizophrenia (Schneider, Weber, Frensch, Stein, & fritz, 2000), multiple sclerosis (Munger et al., 2004), and several cancers such as breast and colon cancer (Egan, Sosman,& Blot, 2005; Freedman, Doesemeci, & McGlynn, 2002; Garland et al., 2006; Grant, 2002). To obtain the required vitamin dose, one must expose hands, face, and arms (15% of the body) to the sun for at least 15 to 20 minutes or until the skin is slightly pink, what is known as one minimal erythemal dose (Holick, 1994). Those with darker-pigmented skin must remain in the sun for a longer period of time to obtain the same benefit because melanin acts as an effective natural sunscreen. However, extended sun exposure (e.g., sunbathing) does not result in vitamin D toxicity because the body is able to convert the provitamin D metabolite to lumisterol through the process of isomerization (Holick, 2002).
- Avoid or limit the amount of acidic foods you consume. Not only will it ruin your teeth acidity feeds bacteria and fungi and augments disease.
- Avoid stress. This one is easier said than done but there are techniques that will help you cope with stress without compromising your health. Believe it or not some stress is good for you. For example when we are presented with a challenge that we are able to overcome this accomplishment or achievement is good for our bodies. It is those stressors that we are faced without any perceived solution that tend to bring down our immune system and disrupt homeostasis.
- Lastly another popular deficiency we all share is trace minerals. The over farming and mass production of crops has rendered our food supply deficient of the many minerals needed to nourish our bodies and provide for good health. Supplementation of trace minerals from organic humic or fulvic acid, which is mined from the earth is a safe and effective way to replenish the many trace minerals we tend to find ourselves deficient. Fulvic acid is an organic natural electrolyte that can balance and energize biological properties it comes into contact with.
